Vaginal Yeast Infection Remedy

Although the majority of women will experience this condition at some point in their lives, the yeast infection remedy may not be the same for each.

A yeast infection is generally the result of high levels of a fungus called candida albicans in the vagina. Providing the warm and moist environment the fungus thrives upon, the vagina and the mouth are common habitats where the fungus can be found. While it is always present and normally harmless, an over population of the fungus in the vagina creates an imbalance; resulting in irritation, a thick white discharge, redness and a maddening itching sensation. This condition is called candidiasis or, more commonly, a vaginal yeast infection.

A doctor should always be consulted when an infection is suspected in order to determine the exact reason for its occurrence. Often, a condition called bacterial vaginosis is actually at the root of the problem. The type of treatment prescribed will depend upon the actual cause of the infection.

The diagnosis of candidiasis is most often confirmed through a physical examination and a culture obtained of the vaginal tissues. Testing the pH levels in the vagina as well as examining the discharge will be able to give the doctor the information they need for an accurate diagnosis. A high pH level and a discharge that can resemble cottage cheese are often the telltale signs confirming candidiasis. Once identified, the doctor will be able to prescribe the proper yeast infection remedy that will alleviate symptoms and return the balance of the vagina to a normal level.

Prescription medications for the condition can include a topical cream that is applied to the vaginal area over the course of one to seven days, depending on the product. Vaginal tablets or suppositories that are inserted can also be prescribed. There are also over the counter products that are very effective, but before using these, you must ensure that the condition is truly a candidiasis. In some cases, a one dose oral pill may be prescribed.

Some women opt to also investigate holistic methods as a treatment. Plain yogurt and honey are high on the list of products that are both natural and effective for treating not only the uncomfortable symptoms of itching but also in reducing the population of the fungus causing the infection.

The important thing to remember when choosing a yeast infection remedy to treat your condition is to first ensure that candidiasis is actually the reason for the condition. Once confirmed, treatment will be simple and quick.
